I wanted to quick share this with everyone. I found it worked over using Disk Utility to restore a .dmg disk image to a USB thumb drive.

sudo /usr/sbin/asr --noverify --erase --source source --target target

Or for example:

sudo /usr/sbin/asr --noverify --erase --source /Users/Shared/yosemite.dmg --target /Volumes/Untitled

You might also find this useful to ensure it's a bootable drive as well:

sudo bless --mount /Volumes/TheVolume --setBoot
